Overview

PulsePanels player software runs on Android, Samsung Tizen, LG webOS and Windows devices, and in any modern web browser. On most platforms the on-screen experience is rendered by a web engine, so the key requirement is a sufficiently recent operating system and browser/WebView engine. Devices that meet the minimums below can run the current player.

Supported platforms and minimum versions

AndroidAndroid 7.0 or newer, with an up-to-date Android System WebView (Chromium 61 engine or newer).APK — from the Download Center in the PulsePanels app; automatic over-the-air updates where the device allowsCovers common Android media players and signage boxes. Android 7 boxes use a separate Android 7 build; Android 8 and newer use the standard build.

WindowsWindows 10 or Windows 11 (64-bit)Installer (.exe) — from the Download Center in the PulsePanels appDesktop and mini-PC players. The current Windows build is unsigned, so Windows may warn about an unknown publisher during installation.
Samsung (Tizen)Tizen 5.5 or newer. Tizen 4 and older cannot run the current player.Tizen widget (.wgt), USB sideload — from the Download Center in the PulsePanels appSamsung Smart Signage / commercial displays. Any model that runs Tizen 5.5 or newer is supported.
LG (webOS)webOS 5 or newer. webOS 4 and older cannot run the current player.webOS package (.ipk), USB sideload — from the Download Center in the PulsePanels appLG commercial displays. Any model that runs webOS 5 or newer is supported.
Web browser (Virtual Screen)A recent version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or SafariNo installation — runs in the browserThe browser-based Virtual Screen.

As a rule of thumb, the web-based player requires a Chromium-based engine of version 61 or newer. Devices whose browser engine is older than this cannot load the current player; on Android 4.4 boxes, use the Lite player instead.

Web dashboard

The PulsePanels web dashboard is supported on recent versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari.

Supported media formats and codecs

The following file types can be uploaded and scheduled. For reliable playback across all player platforms — including older TV and signage engines — we recommend H.264 (MP4) video with AAC audio.

VideoMP4, WebM, MOV, AVI, MPG/MPEGH.264 in MP4 is the most compatible. HEVC/H.265, MPEG-1/2 and some legacy codecs are automatically transcoded to H.264 after upload so they play on browser- and WebView-based players.

Encoding recommendation

For best results, encode video as H.264 (yuv420p) with AAC audio in an MP4 container. PulsePanels transcodes incompatible codecs to H.264 automatically.

Upload limits

  • Maximum file size per upload: 1000 MB.
  • Large files are uploaded in chunks so they can bypass intermediate size limits.

Player-update requirements

  • The web runtime updates itself automatically; on some players the update takes effect after the app relaunches.
  • On Android, the player app itself updates automatically over the air where the device allows it.
  • All player builds are also offered as downloads in the Download Center in the PulsePanels app.
  • To receive the latest features, performance and security fixes, keep players on the current release. We recommend allowing automatic updates where available.
  • The service does not currently enforce a minimum player version. Older player versions are supported on a best-effort basis, subject to the platform minimums above; if an issue is fixed in a newer release, we may ask you to update.

Legacy device support

We invest in compatibility work so PulsePanels runs on older signage hardware — for example Android 7 boxes and older commercial-TV engines down to the Chromium 61 engine minimum, and Android 4.4 boxes through the Lite player. Below the Chromium 61 engine (for example Tizen 4 and webOS 4), the current player cannot load.

Deprecation and end-of-support

From time to time we may end support for a platform or version — for example when a device's browser engine can no longer run the runtime safely. When we plan to end support for a platform or minimum version, we will give at least 90 days' notice.

Beta and experimental platforms

Platforms or player builds labelled beta, preview or experimental are provided for evaluation only. They may change or be withdrawn and are excluded from the Service Level Agreement and standard support commitments.
